Set aside all you’ve read or heard about red wine, red meat, living the rich life etc being the cause of gout. Almost all of it is untrue.
Some background: gout is one of those blood diseases caused by lack of specific genes to properly clear uric acid out of the blood. As a result, those that suffer from gout usually, in the absence of medication, have higher concentration of uric acid in their blood, as a simple blood analysis will demonstrate. That in itself is not necessarily a problem. What is a problem is when the uric acid suddenly chooses to precipitate out of the bloodstream as crystals, settling most typically into joints, such as those of the big toe or elbows – that is excruciatingly painful because of the inflammation response of the body.
A woman may be a carrier of the genetic flaw which causes gout even though she is not affected. Her male children will frequently develop gout in their early 40’s; her female children will usually be carriers.
Marion LeJeune was a carrier. Her son Stephen developed gout in his 40’s. Marion’s daughter Ruth was a carrier. Ruth had no daughters, so produced no new carrier, but all three of her sons were diagnosed with gout in their early 40’s.
So this triggers the question: how did Marion LeJeune become a carrier? Did she inherit it from Jane Louisa? Did any of Jane Louisa’s male children develop gout? Did any of Jane Louisa’s daughters show evidence, through their sons, of being carriers?
Does anyone have any answers to these questions?
